This years audition process and dates

Mid-State Audition Process
This year's audition process will change significantly for students auditioning for Winds, Percussion, and Strings at the grades 11-12 level. The audition process for all other areas (all 7-8, 9-10, and 9-12 Jazz) remains the same as in past years.

11-12 Band and Orchestra Audition Process
Our yearly timeline will change next school year (26-27) due to the TMEA All-State Convention moving from April to January (beginning in 2027). This change will require us to submit our finalized All-State rosters on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Some of our high school marching bands compete every Saturday up through the 2nd week of November (BOA Grand Nationals). This leaves us with only one Saturday (the weekend before Thanksgiving) available for in-person auditions. We believe that the best way to accomplish this task is to implement a new audition process detailed below. We have chosen to pilot the new process one year early with the 11-12 students so that we have time to work out any unexpected issues before all of our 9-10 and 11-12 students move to this process next year.

**Note that registration for students auditioning for 11-12 Band and/or Orchestra will be due earlier than other levels (deadline is September 18)**

Round 1:

Directors will register students in Snap Audition and then submit payment to the association via invoice. All students auditioning for 11-12 Band and/or Orchestra will create a video recording of themselves performing their prepared music (no scales or sight-reading). The director must submit one video of each auditioning student in Snap Audition including all prepared music. The video does not have to be one single take but must be one single video file. Examples of video editing software will be provided. For those of you who had students in All-State last year Snap Audition is the platform that was used, and this will be a very similar process. The submission window for these videos is from Sept.19 - Oct.6.

Evaluation:
All Round 1 videos will be evaluated by a 2-person judging panel utilizing the mid-state audition prepared rubric and ranked by total score. Judges will receive audio only and students will remain anonymous. Each section has a designated number of students that will be advanced on to Round 2: Round 2 Instrumentation. The list of students advancing to Round 2 will be arranged alphabetically by last name and scores will not be released at any time. The goal is to release these lists on or near October 31.

Round 2:
All students that advance to Round 2 will audition in person on Saturday, November 22 at Wilson Central High School. The scores from Round 1 will not carry over and every effort will be made to use a different judging panel for Round 2. The format will be the same as in previous years' auditions - each student will perform their prepared music, play 2 major scales and a chromatic scale, and sight-read three brief etudes. The traditional rubrics and tabulation will be used to rank the students in each section. Results will be published no later than the following day. All students that audition in round 2 will appear on the posted results in either the Gold Band/Orchestra, Silver Band, or as an Alternate. Score reports for these auditions will be released a few weeks after the audition date as usual.

Though we are only using the two-round audition process for 11-12 Band and Orchestra this year, we expect that we will use it for all 9-10 and 11-12 ensembles (including jazz) next year in Fall 2026 and all Round 2 auditions will take place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
